Outside the door of the hotel room next to mine is this discarded box that has written on it, “FULL CAKE.” There is some frosting visible at the bottom. Did I consider opening that box to see if there was any cake in there that looked safe enough to eat? Yes. Of course I did.

BECAUSE I AM A HUMAN BEING WITH A BEATING HEART.

Also, the shutter sound was on on my phone’s camera and I was terrified that I would get caught taking a picture of this discarded cake box and either get beaten up or invited into something weird.

I often portray my mom as a timid lady, because she is so loving and sweet. But she’s tough too, she tried very hard to give us every opportunity in a small place, without much. My mother is the one who has believed in my abilities the longest, and the fiercest, and for that I owe her everything.

In this particular exchange, she also showed me that people’s talent may not always be what it appears to be to others, and that we all may have a greatness in us that not everyone can see.

“I’ve just concluded, for me, personally, it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married,” Obama said in an interview with ABC News.

Obama, who had previously backed strong protections for gay and lesbian couples, said his position had evolved partly after talking to his two daughters Malia and Sasha who had some friends who had same-sex parents.

“It wouldn’t dawn on them that somehow their friends’ parents would be treated differently. It doesn’t make sense to them and frankly, that’s the kind of thing that prompts a change in perspective,” Obama said in the interview.

Beastie Boys - Shake Your Rump

“Sabotage” was my favorite Beastie Boys song for the longest time. Don’t get me wrong, “Sabotage” is a classic. But these days, “Shake Your Rump” is my all-time favorite. As consistently thrilling as “Sabotage” is, “Shake Your Rump” sounds perfect, the rare sound of every piece of a song falling exactly where they should. It’s the moment when the Beastie Boys absolutely nailed the sound. And it’s perhaps the real introduction to a group so tight-knit that they could only be stopped by one of them dying.

When someone from a band I like dies, it always feels a little crass when I have the inevitable thought of “No more albums.” Compared to the personal loss, the artistic side of the equation comes off as small potatoes. This certainly applies for MCA’s death, but there is something particular tragic about what it means for The Beastie Boys. Clearly, this is the definitive end for the band. There is possibly no group in the history of music with personnel as irreplaceable as The Beastie Boys.

Think about this. The Beastie Boys were a band for roughly thirty years. In that time, these three creatively restless individuals never, to the best of my knowledge, formed any side projects. I can only assume this was because they didn’t need side projects. All they needed was The Beastie Boys. That’s how in sync with each other they were. An instrumental album didn’t need a different moniker. It could be a Beastie Boys album. An EP returning to their hardcore roots, after years of being a famous hip-hop outfit, didn’t have to be released under some sort of alter-ego. It could be a Beastie Boys release, too. And every album could absolutely sound fundamentally different from the one that came before. The Beastie Boys weren’t the best rappers or the best punk band or really the best anything. They were just one of the best creative partnerships that has ever existed.

When someone as great as Adam Yauch dies, it’s hard. But it’s also a little easier to take than many deaths. There’s a knowledge that the world has lost someone pretty fantastic. What tempers that is the work he’s left behind and how it will keep living. You can experience that work and bask in the glow that this is what he’s left behind. When it’s stuff as joyful as Paul’s Boutique, Check Your Head, “Sabotage,” and countless other examples, it makes me a little ecstatic to know that he made this stuff.

In terms of sheer lessons to be learned, MCA is a pretty fantastic role model. Here’s just a few. That it’s important to love things and share them without reservation. That you should own up to your mistakes. That everyone deserves respect by default. That branching out isn’t a waste of time. That maintaining sincerity and a sense of humor need not be mutually exclusive. That constantly changing is absolutely worthwhile. I could go on for hours with these. I could learn a lot from Adam Yauch.
